Appleis Software Update application is a great tool for finding and installing Mac OS X and Apple application updates, but sometimes the auto-check feature can get in the way. If you like letting your Mac automatically check for updates, you can set exactly when that happens so it best fits your schedule. Hereis how:
You can set client access to only specific update packages through Software Update Server by disabling automatic mirroring and enabling functions in the General pane. Regardless of the settings in the General pane, your server will automatically synchronize with the Apple Software Update server by requesting a catalog of available updates. Using directions from Apple I successfully have had my Yosemite server serve out software updates to unmanaged clients. The server also serves DHCP and DNS and works correctly in all respects, and always has. Due to circumstances I was forced to change the server's IP address from 192.168.178.201 to 192.168.178.199. Dec 20, 2009 I first use MAc OS Server 10.6.2, I just want to set up 'Software Update Server' with local network. I mean that manual download software file for client to install. But I have no idea how to set up. Anything I find out is use internet for 'Software Update Server'. Or someone have ways to resolve this problem or via proxy to figure out.
- Launch System Preferences. You can find it by selecting Apple Menu > System Preferences.
- Click the Software Update Preference Pane.
- Choose Daily, Weekly, or Monthly from the Check for updates pop-up menu to set how often your Mac checks for updates.
- Clicking the Check Now button sets the current time for your Macis routine checks. Whenever you click the Check Now button, you are resetting the update schedule to match the current date and time.
Choose how often you want to check for system updates. |
---|
For example, if you want to check for updates automatically updates every Monday at noon, make sure that the Check for updates pop-up menu is set to Weekly. Then click the Check Now button at noon on Monday. Thatis it.
Click Check Now to set the day and time for your update checks. |
---|
If you prefer to check for updates on your own instead of automatically, just uncheck Check for updates in the Software Update Preference Pane.

10.6 Server: Set the appropriate Software Update Server
The different catalogs are listed in the manual for Software Update, as well as the commands for setting the catalog via the terminal in unmanaged clients. Lots of good info in that manual.
10.6 Server: Set the appropriate Software Update Server
True, the commands and URLs are in the manual. You're missing the point of the hint if you think that's adequate, though.
The strength of this hint is the AppleScript. It allows you to run the same script on all types of machines, without first needing to check which OS version you're running. There is no error message if you choose the wrong catalog, so having three separate scripts can be problematic.

Awesome hint. I actually tried deploying this using Casper by JAMF. Every once in a while it would fail and the log stated that there was a missing '>' somewhere. Obviously there are no brackets in your script. To avoid the issue I rewrote it as a bash script. Thanks again!

Wow, that's awesome! Thanks for sharing your rewrite!

Thank you so much for this - your script helped me solve my problem after migrating from Server 10.5 to Server 10.6. Awesome!
10.6 Server: Set the appropriate Software Update Server
Hi,
I'm a complete Applescript newbie and I can't get this script (the one that checks the server) to work.
Get the following error message in Applescript:
error 'dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache
dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache
2009-11-13 10:40:06.733 defaults[349:60f]
The domain/default pair of (com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, CatalogURL) does not exist' number 1
What do I do wrong?
First I just tried to copy and paste the string but it wouldn't compile, then i put 'display dialog SUServer' on a different line and got the above error message. Download to hard drive from google drive mac.
I'm running 10.6.2.
Cheers
Bjorn

10.6 Server: Set the appropriate Software Update Server
Hi! Sorry about the very late reply.but this is actually the expected result:
2009-11-13 10:40:06.733 defaults[349:60f]
The domain/default pair of (com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, CatalogURL) does not exist'
if your Software Update Server is set to Apple's. If you had another Software Update Server set, it would display the URL (I'm something of an AppleScript newbie myself, otherwise I'd write something that outputs a better error message.). I'm not sure why you're getting this error:
error 'dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache
dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache

Looking again, it appears something got mangled when the hint was published. Register teams as the chat app for office for mac. This is how to check the current Software Update server: Npm running in parallels for mac.
Mac Os Server Version
set SUServer to do shell script 'defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL'
display dialog SUServer
Best virtual home staging software. 10.6 Server: Set the appropriate Software Update Server
FYI: Apple has an excellent KBase article now, detailing a portion of this hint and more:

And with Mac OS X Server 10.6.7, they can all use the same URL (see the article linked above, it's been updated). Awesome!
